A Chandler Pediatric Dentist Discusses Cavity Development
Cavities – A Topic of Concern
As a Chandler pediatric dentist, the topic of cavities is often discussed in our office. After all, cavities are the major cause of disease among children and one of the main reasons for seeing a dentist. Therefore, cavities are an ongoing dental concern. If a child has cavities then, we, at Kids First Pediatric Dentistry, use one of a number of treatments to treat the decay. It all depends on the size of the cavity.
Cavities may be treated by placing a tooth-colored filling in the hole or by performing a procedure known as a pulpotomy – a baby tooth root canal. In some instances, a crown is placed on the tooth. Therefore, it is a good idea to treat a cavity early as the treatment options are typically more conservative. Leaving a cavity untreated can result in pain or a larger dental issue.
Naturally, the best way to address tooth decay is with prevention. Therefore, using the proper techniques when brushing and flossing the teeth are helpful as is following a proper diet. A parent should emphasize a nutritional plan that underscores eating vegetables and fruits at an early age. Processed foods and sweets should be avoided as much as possible. Examples of processed foods include crackers, cookies and junk food, such as chips.
Sealants can also help significantly in the reduction of caries. Research shows that children who receive sealants are 70% less likely to have to undergo restorative dental treatments. That is good news for any parent who wants to keep the costs reduced for his child’s ongoing dental care.
