How do I know my Pediatric Dentist practices preventive dentistry?

This is a great question!  At our office we pride ourselves in being a preventive pediatric dental office.  It should be your pediatric dentist’s goal to see their dental families on a regular basis for check up appointments and help them to either maintain being cavity free or treat them so they can become cavity free.

Cleaning and polishing your child’s teeth and applying fluoride treatments are all part of your child’s preventive treatment.  However, there is much more. For example, your pediatric dentist can apply sealants to help protect your child from tooth decay, help you select a mouth guard to prevent sports injuries, and provide early diagnosis of possible orthodontic problems.

Your pediatric dentist is uniquely trained to develop a combination of office and home preventive care to insure your child a happy smile.  At our office we have a cavity free club to encourage our patients to either become cavity free or stay that way!

What can I do as a parent to help?

I’m sure this is a question you want to know about many things!  We can only tell you about what you can do for preventive dentistry though.

First things first, make an appointment at a pediatric dentist for your child.  We recommend you look at their website, reviews and go to their office for a tour.  Any good pediatric dental office will be excited to give you and your child a tour.  Choose a pediatric dentist whois Board Certified

After the pediatric dentist has completed a thorough oral examination and assessed your child’s risk for developing cavities, he or she will design a personalized preventive plan of home care for your child.

This program will include brushing and flossing instructions, diet counseling and, if necessary, fluoride recommendations.

By doing what your pediatric dentist has recommended and bringing your child back for regular check up visits, you can help give your child a lifetime of healthy habits.

At what point does preventive dentistry begin?

Good preventive dentistry begins even before your child’s first tooth!

Daily cleaning of the gums should start while your child is a baby.  This will help with setting the tone to a future of healthy teeth! Once that first tooth has erupted it is time to start brushing it.  Yes even if your child only has 1 tooth it should be brushed. It is recommended that you visit your pediatric dentist when the first tooth comes in or no later than 12 months of age to establish a dental home.

Early dental visits are imperative for a lifetime of good oral health. The earlier the dental visit, the better the chance of preventing dental disease and helping your child build a cavity-free smile. Not only will this set them up for a bright future but they will grow to know their dentist and look forward to their dental visit!

Why is preventive dentistry important?

We could ask this question for well child check ups also.  But we don’t because we know we have to make sure that our children are healthy.  Sometimes we forget that our teeth require a different doctor and need to have check ups also.  There are many reasons that preventive dentistry is important.

Children with healthy mouths have a better chance of overall general health.  Keeping your teeth healthy may help instill the value and importance of taking care of the rest of their bodies.

Problems with your child’s mouth, whether it is decay, the way they bite, if their teeth are crooked or anything else, can interfere with eating and adequate nutritional intake, speaking, self-esteem, and daily activities.

Severe decay can affect growth and development.  Tooth decay can lead to an infection.  If your child’s tooth becomes severely infected it can get into the blood stream and ultimately make your child very sick.  If this were to go on for a long time you can see how it could do a lot of damage.

Dental pain may cause children to be unable to concentrate in school.  Think of it this way - if  you have a pain in your leg, it hurts.  You have trouble thinking about anything else.  If your child has a tooth or teeth that are causing them pain you can see how it would be hard to have a good day at school!

Children tend to have more confidence in their appearance when they have a healthy mouth.

Finally, preventive dentistry can result in less extensive — and less expensive — treatment for your child.  This will save you both money and time!  And keeping everyone happy and healthy!

What exactly is preventive dentistry?

Preventive dentistry is to prevent decay and unhealthy dental problems from arising.  If your pediatric dentist can teach you about preventive dentistry early you will understand it and possibly be able to stop dental problems such as decay, pain, and infection, before they ever begin.

Preventive dental care includes the following:

Proper nutrition and dietary habits- eating and drinking the wrong things can be detrimental to your dental health.

Brushing and flossing- at least 2 x a day. Brushing should begin from the moment your child gets their first tooth in

Fluoride- once every 6 months in your dental office and using fluoride toothpaste is recommended in most cases

Regular dental check-ups- Recommended every 6 months, especially for children.  If you’re not careful, something small could turn into something big quickly

Assessing risk for developing cavities- this is done primarily through x-rays and exams

Evaluating oral growth and development- we do this by exams and by taking a Panoramic x-ray

Oral health education- we will explain proper brushing and flossing techniques and give out informational brochures

Protection against injuries- we are able to do mouth guards for your children if they are involved in sports of any kind

Management of oral habits-this is done through devices that can be placed by a pediatric dentist or orthodontist (i.e. thumb sucking appliance).

Guidance of erupting teeth- you bringing your child in for regular check ups and getting x rays allows us to be able to follow the teeth and possible catch any problems early rather than later

Sealants- These are one of the best preventive moves a parent can make!  They are a plastic-like protective cover that we place on permanent 6 and 12 year molars; these help prevent bacteria from getting into the little grooves on the chewing surfaces

Each and every pediatric dentist should be a preventive dentist.  Pediatric dentist are here to help create and maintain a health, happy smile to follow your children into adulthood.

Preventive Dentistry

In this series of blogs we want to explain preventive dentistry and what it means to you. We will examine the questions below…

What exactly does preventive dentistry mean?

Why is preventive dentistry important?

What can I do as a parent to help?

At what point does preventive dentistry begin?

How do I know my Pediatric Dentist practices preventive dentistry?

Today we will discuss how our office begins the preventive dental journey.  Here at Kids First Pediatric Dentistry we are committed to taking care of your child’s teeth.  This begins from the moment that you call our office to make an appointment.  We gather information from you to being our research on what individual dental needs your child has.  Your first visit at our office begins with X-rays and a Complete Oral Exam by either Dr. Randy Weinshel or  Dr. Tyler Carter.  From there your doctor will determine what course of action to take for your child.  Once your child’s doctor is able to asses your child’s dental needs we begin our road to maintaining a happy and healthy smile through Preventive Dentistry!  Additionally we would like for you to know that all dental decisions are based on your child’s dental needs and not based on what your insurance may or may not allow.

Please read our dental insurance blogs for further education on this matter.

Aren’t they just baby teeth??

Yes, they are baby teeth!  But they are not “just” baby teeth.  Most children start to lose their baby teeth beginning at age 6 and the molars are kept until about the age of 12.  So as you can see we keep our “baby teeth” until we are much older than babies!

Some of the problems that can happen if we do not take care of our child’s baby teeth are infections, space loss, and speech impediments.  It is much more costly and possibly dangerous to wait on getting treatment done than to get it done when the dentist tells you what your child needs.  A small white filling could turn into a Pulp and Crown or an Extraction and Space Maintainer in no time.  The biggest reason for this is because baby teeth have less enamel and dentin than our adult teeth do.  Because of this a small filling can blow up in a short period of time to something more serious.

At our office we are a preventive office.  This means we do not do unnecessary treatment and we encourage our patients to become cavity free, if they aren’t already.  To help encourage them we have the Cavity Free Club.  Every time they come into the office for a check up and are cavity free their name goes in a drawing to win a special prize.  Some of the prizes we have given in the past are a Sonicare Spin brush, Yogurt gift cards, movie tickets, and a basket full of goodies!

Remember to brush 2 x a day.. no matter how old you are!

Dental Safety Over the Holiday Weekend!!

One of the biggest holiday weekends, July 4th, is coming up!

We want all our dental families to have fun with family and friends so we would like to give you a few friendly reminders about dental safety!

Be careful around the pool!

Not only can the pool be dangerous because of drownings, but it is also an area where more injuries happen to teeth than you might think!  If you do have a dental emergency over this holiday weekend call our office and our recording will give you the doctor on calls phone number.  We can tell you if you need to be seen right away or if it will be OK to wait until we open on July 5th.

If you plan on going camping, boating, horse back riding, riding quads or anything similar make sure your children are aware of their surroundings.  If they plan to ride bikes, horses, quads or skate with their friends make sure they are being safe and wearing the appropriate safety gear!

Don’t forget about a mouth guard!  This is one of the most inexpensive ways to protect yourteeth.  You can get a mouth guard from pretty much any store or you can contact our office and we can have one made for your child in their favorite color.

Whatever you do this holiday weekend have a wonderful and safe time!
